Cooperative Society

Originally, the first San Roque cooperative was founded in May 1951 as a group of cereal, oil and grape farmers. These 29 pioneers from Elvillar laid the foundations and 25 pesetas each for the creation of the current winery.

With the rise of the wine industry in the area, the first President, Mr. Cayetano García, supported by the other partners and with the help of the promoter Mr. Francisco Martínez de Bujo, built the winery's facilities with 44 concrete tanks, two years after its constitution, on the farm of Julio Fernández that collected 1000 pesetas per bushel.

Years that create nostalgia for us, like in 1953 when people started talking about Rioja Alavesa, differentiating the origins of our wines from the others in La Rioja.

In 1954 the San Roque de Elvillar Cooperative Winery was physically inaugurated, rapidly increasing in number of partners and in grape volume. 15 years later, not all the grapes that the almost 60 members brought in each vintage did not enter, and it was decided to expand the production cellar again.

In 1984, the cooperative tripled the volume of production and integrated new steel tanks, automatic presses and bottling plants in a new expansion of the winery on the other side of the Carretera de Assa, linking both wineries with a tunnel underneath the same. road.

Since 1984 the winery has produced high-quality wines of the year under the brands Paulejas, Viurco and Elcoviña, but it was not until 2006 when it was decided to carry out aging in barrels and for this they built the last phase of the winery, much more modern and technified and of course with its wide barrel cellar. At that time they created the current brand by which the winery is known, Cota 585, being the height at which the winery is located, at the foot of Sierra Cantabria.
